David Mayer de Rothschild's goofy plan to sail–and save–the Pacific

Only a Rothschild could have time for a project like this: an ocean voyage, from San Francisco to Sydney, aboard a ship made of used plastic bottles.

David Mayer de Rothschild, a scion of the powerful banking family, has dabbled in naturopathy and organic farming since he was in college.

Now de Rothschild plans to sail the “Plastiki,” which looks like something the Professor dreamed-up to escape Gilligan’s Island, across the Pacific.

Through press coverage of the stunt, he hopes to encourage people to consume less, and recycle more.

De Rothschild is most often portrayed in the media as an adventurer: someone who has forgone a life of comfort for one filled with risk and danger. His mission: to rescue the planet from its human inhabitants.

De Rothschild said he got the Plastiki idea after watching a TV show showing trash floating about in the world’s oceans. (See the Plastiki video, from the New Yorker magazine, below).

Outside and Plenty magazines, Grist.org and most recently, the New Yorker, have been uniformly fawning in their coverage of the handsome, six-foot-four, 30-year-old sex symbol for the green movement.

De Rothschild also heads a travel company, Adventure Ecology.

Adventure Ecology publishes a school curriculum, which teaches kids to change their consumption behaviors, and warns of the damage caused by wearing both synthetic and natural textiles, such as cotton.

  1. I have no time for this S.OB. I watch him trying to tell my kids on Nick Jr how to save water to save the planet. He is just the psoter boy for the greening of our youth.
Agree about Alex the Great though, he made a big deal about how what he said about postions of the planets in relation to the Sun. David De Rothschild is just a rich boy with an agenda. Jones is loud mouth using the method against the so called opposition.

  2. I have to wonder if David wasn’t a de Rothschild, if people would have the same opposition to him.

What he is doing is admirable, no matter how much money his family has. The great thing about David
de Rothschild is HE IS NOT A SNOB. That’s what makes him special. He doesn’t act, dress or live in a
way that indicates he is above anyone else. He goes out of his way to make others feel comfortable
    around him.

Enough of the criticism, and jealousy. The guy has everything and yet is willing to do risky expeditions to
bring attention to problems of the environment – what is not to like???
