2012: NASA sees start of "new solar cycle"

NASA today published a forecast for a “big and intense” new solar cycle in 2011 or 2012, which its suggests will wreak havoc on satellite GPS and telecommunications, power grids and air traffic.

NASA says the next solar cycle, Solar Cycle 24, “could make itself felt as never before.”

We are now at the end of Solar Cycle 23 (see graphic, and excerpts, below), according to the U.S. space agency.

It may not look like much, but “this patch of magnetism could be a sign of the next solar cycle,” says solar physicist David Hathaway of the Marshall Space Flight Center.

  1. I don’t really think that the world will be ending in 2012. Just like everyone freaking out about Y2K, this is just another hoax to freak people out and make them spend more money to attempt to save themselves. There is a reason for the Mayan Calender ending: their population was pretty much killed off by time the next calender was to be made, being that they made their calenders so long in advance. & as for Nostrodamus…he was fucking crazy…he researched & re-interpreted the bible in a way for himself to understand and actually from my research his predictions weren’t until the 3000′s anyways so I won’t be around to see it. I can agree with NASA that there will only be a new solar cycle like there normally has been for thousands of years.
